Referrals to specialists and more specialized care are made following appropriate assessment and investigation by family doctors. It is generally not an option to obtain a referral to a specialist directly - your family physician is obligated, by OHIP among other things, to ensure all referrals to specialists are medically appropriate and necessary.

On a more practical note, many specialists require that certain preliminary investigations are done in advance of being referred. Referrals missing this information are rejected, leading to increased wait times and delays.
