OHIP Coverage
Expired OHIP Cards
Please ensure that your OHIP coverage is kept up-to-date at all times. If your OHIP is expired or due to expire soon, please visit this link for more information on how to renew your OHIP card. The Ministry of Health will generally send you a reminder notice approximately two months before your OHIP expires. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that your OHIP coverage is kept up-to-date at all times.
Ensuring that your OHIP coverage is valid is critical as government funded health care providers are only remunerated for services delivered if you have valid OHIP coverage. As a result, if you require an appointment but have neglected to renew your OHIP coverage, we may need to invoice you for the cost of the appointment ($30 - $100+).
Reporting Your Updated Information
Once your OHIP has been renewed, please remember to complete this secure form to let us know of your new OHIP information and to ask for reimbursement of any amounts paid by you out-of-pocket during the period in which you were not covered by OHIP.
With this information, we will retroactively seek reimbursement from the government for the cost of your appointment(s). If we are successful, we will reimburse you the original amount(s) paid, less any non-refundable fees. Please note that the earlier you advise us of your updated OHIP information, the more likely our claim for reimbursement will be successful and the more likely that we will be able to reimburse you.
Do I Need OHIP?
In short, yes. At Arbour Family Medical we provide ongoing, long-term primary care for enrolled patients. As we are not a walk-in-clinic or urgent care facility, we do not provide treatment for visitors and/or non-residents of Ontario who are not covered by OHIP.
Unfortunately, this rule also extends to residents of Ontario who are not yet or will not be covered by OHIP. Due to the nature of our relationship with the Ontario Ministry of Health, we are currently only able to provide care to OHIP covered patients, even in situations where you will be getting OHIP soon and are covered by other insurance plans in the meantime.
Should you be in need of medical care and are without OHIP, our suggestion is to visit either a walk-in clinic, or to make inquiries with other family doctor offices. There may be offices which are better able to accommodate your needs.
